Benzora: What's In It and How It Works

Benzora is Nolla’s clarifying daytime formula. It contains a single active ingredient - benzoyl peroxide - at a targeted concentration. If this is your prescription, your clinician has determined that bacterial activity and clogged follicles are driving your breakouts, and that a focused, single-active approach is the right starting point for your skin.

What’s In Benzora

Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most well-established actives in acne treatment and has been a first-line recommendation in dermatology for decades. It works in two ways simultaneously.

First, it’s antibacterial. It releases oxygen directly into the follicle, creating an environment that C. acnes - the bacteria responsible for inflammatory acne - cannot survive in. Unlike antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide doesn’t create resistance. Bacteria can’t adapt to being killed by oxygen the way they can adapt to antibiotics, which is one reason it remains effective with long-term use.

Second, it’s mildly keratolytic - it helps loosen the dead skin cells that accumulate at the follicle opening and contribute to blockages. Clearing those blockages reduces the conditions that allow bacteria to multiply and cause breakouts in the first place.

Benzora uses benzoyl peroxide as a standalone rather than combining it with an antibiotic. This is appropriate when bacterial activity is the primary concern without the additional complexity that warrants a combination formula.

What To Expect - And When

Weeks 1–2: Some initial dryness, flaking, or tightness is common as your skin adjusts. This typically settles within the first two weeks. Benzoyl peroxide doesn’t speed up cell turnover in the way retinoids do, so a true purging response is unlikely - any new breakouts at this stage are more likely existing congestion surfacing.

Weeks 3–4: Actively inflamed spots should start to reduce. Skin may still look uneven, but the frequency of new breakouts typically begins to slow.

Weeks 6–8: Meaningful improvement should be visible. The skin’s bacterial environment takes several weeks to shift, and the full benefit of consistent use becomes clear in this window.

How To Use It

Benzora is a daytime formula - apply it in the morning after cleansing and before moisturiser and SPF.

  • SPF every day, no exceptions. Benzoyl peroxide increases photosensitivity. If you have any existing post-acne marks, UV exposure will significantly slow how quickly they fade. SPF 30 minimum; SPF 50 if you’re spending time outdoors.
  • It will bleach fabric. Benzoyl peroxide is an oxidising agent and will discolour anything it touches while wet. Allow it to absorb fully before contact with fabric.
  • Use a thin, even layer. Applying more product doesn’t speed up results. It increases irritation without increasing efficacy.
  • Keep actives separated. Don’t layer retinoids, acids, or vitamin C in your morning routine alongside Benzora. Evening use of these ingredients is fine.

Who Benzora Is Designed For

Benzora is well suited to acne-prone skin where inflammatory spots - red, raised, and sometimes painful - are the primary concern, and where the goal is a straightforward, single-active formula. It’s also a common starting point for skin that hasn’t used prescription actives before.

The Bottom Line

  • Benzoyl peroxide kills acne-causing bacteria by releasing oxygen into the follicle - bacteria can’t develop resistance to it the way they can to antibiotics
  • It also helps clear the follicle blockages that allow bacteria to build up
  • Expect 6–8 weeks for clear improvement; initial dryness in weeks 1–2 is normal and temporary
  • SPF and fabric awareness are both important practical considerations with this formula
  • Simple, evidence-backed, and effective when bacterial acne is the primary driver
