Ivela: What's In It and How It Works

Ivela is Nolla’s calming formula for rosacea-prone skin. It combines three ingredients - ivermectin, azelaic acid, and niacinamide - each targeting a different aspect of rosacea: the inflammatory skin mite that drives much of the condition, the persistent redness and pigmentation, and the compromised skin barrier that makes the skin reactive. If this is your prescription, your clinician has assessed that rosacea is a significant factor in your skin concerns.

What’s In Ivela

Ivermectin is the ingredient that distinguishes Ivela from other Nolla formulas. It’s an antiparasitic agent with a specific role in rosacea treatment: it targets Demodex mites. These microscopic mites live in the hair follicles of most people without causing problems - but in rosacea-prone skin, Demodex populations are significantly elevated, and the inflammatory response to them drives much of the visible redness, papules, and sensitivity associated with the condition. Topical ivermectin reduces Demodex populations and directly interrupts this inflammatory cycle.

Azelaic acid adds anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action, targets the redness and reactive pigmentation associated with rosacea flares, and inhibits melanin production - addressing the uneven skin tone that can accumulate with repeated flaring.

Niacinamide reinforces the skin barrier, which in rosacea-prone skin is typically compromised - more permeable to irritants and more reactive than healthy skin. Strengthening the barrier reduces the frequency and severity of flares triggered by environmental factors and lifestyle triggers.

What To Expect - And When

Weeks 1–3: Some initial adjustment is normal. Ivermectin is generally well tolerated but in the first week some patients notice a temporary uptick in skin sensitivity or mild dryness.

Weeks 4–6: Reduction in the frequency and severity of inflammatory rosacea papules is typically noticeable. Background redness may begin to improve. Because ivermectin is working on the Demodex population rather than surface inflammation directly, this takes longer than formulas targeting only surface bacteria.

Weeks 8–12: Fewer papules, calmer baseline redness, and improved barrier resilience. Azelaic acid’s work on pigmentation and tone also becomes visible in this window with consistent use. Rosacea is a chronic condition and Ivela is designed for ongoing management - results compound with consistent use.

How To Use It

Ivela is a morning formula - apply it after cleansing and before moisturizer and SPF.

  • SPF every day, all year round. UV exposure is one of the most consistent rosacea triggers. SPF 50 is recommended, especially for fair or sensitive skin.
  • Avoid known rosacea triggers alongside treatment. Heat, alcohol, spicy food, and harsh skincare will continue to cause flares if not managed. The formula works best as part of a broader approach.
  • Be consistent. Managing Demodex populations requires regular, sustained use. Inconsistent application reduces the formula’s effectiveness significantly.
  • Avoid physical exfoliants and harsh cleansers. Products that abrade or strip the skin increase barrier permeability and reactivity.

Who Ivela Is Designed For

Ivela is specifically designed for rosacea-type presentations - persistent background redness, inflammatory papules, reactive and easily triggered skin, and sensitivity to a wide range of products and environmental factors. If your primary concern is acne rather than rosacea, another Nolla formula is likely a better fit.

The Bottom Line

  • Ivermectin targets Demodex mites, which are elevated in rosacea-prone skin and drive its characteristic inflammation
  • Azelaic acid adds anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and pigmentation-controlling action
  • Niacinamide supports the compromised skin barrier that makes rosacea-prone skin reactive
  • Meaningful improvement in papule frequency and redness typically appears at weeks 4–8; pigmentation benefits at weeks 8–12
  • Rosacea is a chronic condition - Ivela is designed for ongoing management
