Lumeva: What's In It and How It Works

Lumeva is Nolla’s brightening morning formula. It combines tranexamic acid and niacinamide - two ingredients that approach the same problem from different angles - to target post-acne pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and the dark marks that breakouts leave behind. If this is your prescription, addressing existing discolouration and preventing new pigmentation from forming is a central goal of your treatment plan.

What’s in Lumeva

Tranexamic acid works by blocking the communication between keratinocytes (skin cells) and melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) that occurs after inflammation - specifically, it disrupts the signal that tells melanocytes to produce and transfer excess melanin. When a spot heals, the inflammation triggers a localised increase in melanin production. This is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation - the dark or red mark left after a breakout resolves. Tranexamic acid interrupts this process at the signalling stage, reducing how much pigment is deposited and helping to fade existing marks.

Niacinamide approaches pigmentation from a different biological step. Where tranexamic acid blocks the signal that triggers melanin production, niacinamide blocks the transfer of melanin from melanocytes into skin cells after it’s produced - acting as a second checkpoint in the pigmentation cascade. The combination addresses pigmentation at two stages rather than one, which is significantly more effective than either ingredient alone.

What To Expect - And When

Weeks 1–3: Lumeva has a gentle profile - meaningful irritation is uncommon. You may not notice visible changes yet, which is expected. Both ingredients work at a cellular signalling level, and visible pigmentation changes take longer than surface-level inflammation to become apparent.

Weeks 4–8: Early fading of existing post-acne marks typically becomes noticeable. Skin tone often begins to even out - fewer sharp contrasts between cleared areas and pigmented marks.

Weeks 8–16: The full effect of consistent use on pigmentation becomes visible here. Long-standing marks and persistent discolouration respond more slowly than recent ones, but meaningful improvement with continued use is well supported by clinical evidence.

How To Use It

Lumeva is a morning formula - apply it after cleansing and before SPF.

  • SPF is the single most important thing you can do alongside Lumeva. UV exposure directly stimulates melanin production and erases the progress of tranexamic acid and niacinamide. SPF 50 every morning is strongly recommended.
  • Results take time - don’t assess too early. Pigmentation is a slower process to reverse than active inflammation. Commit to assessing at eight weeks minimum.
  • It layers well with other skincare. Both ingredients are well tolerated alongside most actives, including retinoids in the evening and vitamin C in the morning.
  • New breakouts will create new marks. Lumeva works best as part of a combined treatment plan - it can’t address new pigmentation as fast as new breakouts can create it without the acne being controlled alongside it.

Who Lumeva Is Designed For

Lumeva is suited to patients for whom post-acne pigmentation is a significant and persistent concern, and where improving overall skin tone and clarity is a primary goal. It’s particularly appropriate for deeper skin tones, which are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after acne.

The Bottom Line

  • Tranexamic acid blocks the signal that triggers post-inflammatory melanin production; niacinamide blocks the transfer of melanin into skin cells - together they address pigmentation at two stages
  • The combination is more effective than either ingredient alone for fading post-acne marks
  • Both ingredients are well tolerated - meaningful irritation is uncommon
  • SPF 50 every morning is essential - UV exposure directly counteracts what Lumeva is doing
  • Visible improvement on pigmentation takes 6–12 weeks; don’t assess too early
